Japan Rail Pass hike

Publishers reported that Japan Rail Pass prices for foreign tourists are set to rise by about 5–6% from October 2026, affecting Shinkansen and other rail travel budgets. (travelandtourworld.com) The increase was presented as a broader move to shift visitor flow and cover transport costs. (travelandtourworld.com)

Japan’s nationwide rail pass for foreign tourists will get more expensive on October 1, 2026 — but only if travelers buy it through overseas agencies. (japanrailpass.net) The six Japan Rail Group passenger companies said agency-sold Japan Rail Passes will rise by about 5 to 6 percent from October 1, 2026, the first revision since October 1, 2023. The pass covers unlimited travel on Japan Rail trains, including most Shinkansen bullet trains. (japanrailpass.net) For adults in standard class, the seven-day pass will rise from 50,000 yen to 53,000 yen, the 14-day pass from 80,000 yen to 84,000 yen, and the 21-day pass from 100,000 yen to 105,000 yen. Green Car passes bought through agencies will rise to 74,000 yen, 116,000 yen, and 147,000 yen. (japanrailpass.net) The official Japan Rail Pass website is keeping its online prices unchanged at 50,000 yen, 80,000 yen, and 100,000 yen for adult standard passes. That means the October increase creates a wider gap between buying direct from Japan Rail and buying through a travel agent abroad. (japanrailpass.net) That distinction matters because the pass already became much more expensive on October 1, 2023, when Japan Rail raised nationwide pass prices by roughly 65 to 77 percent depending on the pass type. The new 2026 change is smaller, but it lands on top of that earlier jump. (japanrailpass.net; japan-guide.com) The pass is sold only to short-term visitors and certain overseas-resident Japanese nationals, and it remains one of the few tickets that bundles long-distance rail travel across multiple Japan Rail companies into one fare. Japan Rail says only passes bought online through its own reservation service allow advance seat reservations online. (japanrailpass.net; japanrailpass.net) Japan Rail said some group companies adjusted their regular ticket prices after the 2023 revision, which is the reason given in its April 9, 2026 notice for changing agency prices again. The company notice does not announce a change to the official website’s listed yen prices. (japanrailpass.net; japanrailpass.net) For travelers planning autumn 2026 trips, the practical cutoff is the purchase date: passes bought online at the official site keep the current listed price, while exchange orders issued by overseas agents on or after October 1, 2026 will cost more.
