Limerick Greenway Launches VR Tour
The 40km Limerick Greenway in Ireland now offers a virtual reality tour, allowing people worldwide and those unable to travel to experience the scenic route from home. This immersive initiative brings local history and countryside to your living room, and may inspire future city trails to adopt similar tech for remote explorers. London's art scene also welcomes a blockbuster exhibition on Ramses II, the legendary Egyptian pharaoh.
The Limerick Greenway's new virtual tour is the first of its kind in Ireland, digitally mapping the entire 40km route. The project was an eight-month collaboration between Limerick City and County Council and Global Virtual Asset Management (VAM) Ltd., involving extensive 360-degree video capture. This initiative is seen as a boost for "smart tourism," positioning the region ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup which will be hosted in Adare. The greenway itself follows the path of the old Limerick to Tralee railway line, which was operational from the late 1800s until the 1970s. After a €10 million upgrade, the route reopened in 2021 and has since attracted 1.5 million visitors. The trail runs from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale, passing through several towns and by historic landmarks such as the 19th-century Ferguson's Viaduct and the 115-metre long Barnagh Tunnel. The Ramses II exhibition, officially titled "Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs," is currently at NEON at Battersea Power Station. The exhibition features over 180 artifacts on loan from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, many of which have never been seen in the UK before. This exhibition is a global tour, having already visited Houston, Paris, and Sydney. Key items on display include the ornate wooden coffin of Ramses II, the gold mask of King Amenemope, and various animal mummies and intricate jewelry. General admission tickets start at £24.90.
