Keaton Wagler, Illinois’ leading scorer as a freshman, has declared for the 2026 National Basketball Association draft, ESPN reported Saturday. (espn.com) Wagler was listed No. 5 in ESPN’s Top 100 prospects and averaged 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 37 games for a 28-9 Illinois team. (espn.com; sports-reference.com) Illinois reached the Final Four for the first time since 2005 before losing 71-62 to Connecticut on April 4, and Wagler scored 20 points with eight rebounds in that semifinal. (fightingillini.com; sports-reference.com) His declaration puts one of college basketball’s most productive first-year guards into a draft class that National Basketball Association teams are still sorting through in April. ESPN’s March mock draft said many borderline prospects could return to school because name, image and likeness money has changed the math for first-round hopefuls. (espn.com) Wagler’s case looks different from that group because his season pushed him into projected lottery range. ESPN described him as a projected lottery pick, while CBS Sports wrote in late March that his tournament run had reinforced his standing in the lottery. (espn.com; cbssports.com) The freshman built that résumé with efficient shooting and a heavy offensive load. Sports-Reference lists him at 44.5% from the field, 39.7% from 3-point range and 1.8 turnovers per game. (sports-reference.com) He also delivered some of Illinois’ biggest regular-season performances, including a 46-point game at Purdue on Jan. 24 and a 34-point game against Wisconsin on Feb. 10. Illinois finished 15-5 in Big Ten play and went 6-4 on neutral courts. (espn.com; fightingillini.com) For Illinois, the decision removes the team’s primary creator from a roster that had relied on a tight rotation through March. Sporting News reported that coach Brad Underwood used an eight-man rotation and that no other reserve averaged even six minutes. (sportingnews.com) For players who want to keep college eligibility while testing the draft, National Collegiate Athletic Association rules have long allowed a withdrawal deadline 10 days after the National Basketball Association draft combine ends. The National Collegiate Athletic Association said on April 1 that Division I officials were also considering rule changes tied to draft withdrawals for prospects before college enrollment. (ncaa.org; ncaa.org) The next step is the usual pre-draft cycle: workouts, medical reviews and team interviews before the 2026 draft in late June. Wagler enters that process after one college season that ended with Illinois in Indianapolis and his stock higher than it was when the year began. (nba.com; espn.com)
