WhatsApp's New AI Chat Sorting Sparks Privacy Fears

Meta is rolling out an AI-powered chat organization feature in WhatsApp, but the move is reopening privacy debates. Critics are concerned the feature could expand the scope of data Meta processes, potentially using chat content to train AI models or drive ad targeting.

A revised Meta privacy policy explicitly states that interactions with its AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger can be used to personalize ads. This data collection for ad targeting has no opt-out mechanism, except for users in the European Union, the UK, and South Korea, due to regional data protection laws. Conversational data from AI chats provides a much clearer signal of user intent compared to traditional metrics like likes or shares. A user asking the AI about specific products or travel plans generates a direct and valuable data point for targeting algorithms, a significant shift from analyzing more passive user behavior. In response to privacy concerns, Meta is developing "Private Processing," a technology that uses a secure cloud environment known as a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). This system is designed to handle optional AI tasks like summarizing messages without Meta itself being able to access the content, which is then deleted after the request is completed. While interactions with the AI are processed by Meta, standard WhatsApp chats remain end-to-end encrypted by default using the respected Signal Protocol. This default encryption gives WhatsApp a security advantage over Telegram, whose chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default, while Signal is often cited as the most secure for its minimal data collection practices. The AI chat organization feature first appeared for select users in the WhatsApp beta for Android, specifically version 2.26.9.4. In this beta, each new prompt to the AI initiates a distinct conversation thread, though a "memory" feature remains shared across all AI chats unless manually disabled. This feature is part of a broader push toward deeper AI integration expected to expand throughout 2026. The roadmap includes more advanced AI-powered tools for businesses, such as automated customer support, AI-generated replies, and enhanced analytics dashboards to track conversation quality and ROI.
