Runaway Boat Jams 91 Freeway
Traffic on the 91 Freeway in Bellflower was snarled after a boat detached from its trailer and ended up blocking lanes. No injuries were reported in the incident, but it caused significant delays while authorities worked to clear the scene.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on a Sunday evening as a vessel being towed by a U-Haul trailer came loose on the eastbound 91 Freeway. The boat then sailed over the center median, landing in the westbound carpool lane near the Lakewood Boulevard exit in Bellflower. Dashcam video from a Tesla captured the dramatic moment the boat crashed onto the freeway, narrowly avoiding the electric vehicle. The driver of the U-Haul that was towing the boat did not stop after the incident, and the California Highway Patrol is now searching for them. Authorities from the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene and managed to clear the wreckage within two hours, reopening the lanes to traffic. The 91 Freeway is a major commuter corridor where even minor incidents can cause significant backups. Failures in properly securing a boat to its trailer are a common cause of such accidents. Experts recommend ensuring the coupler is locked, safety chains are crossed, and straps are used to keep the boat and trailer operating as a single unit. Other frequent points of failure for boat trailers include wheel bearing issues, tire blowouts, and electrical system failures, often exacerbated by saltwater corrosion. Regular maintenance checks on brakes, tires, and hardware are crucial to prevent roadside emergencies.
