Zaha Hadid Concert Hall Coming
Zaha Hadid Architects have been selected to design a futuristic concert hall in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The project continues the firm's tradition of bold, contemporary shapes and innovative acoustic design in major cultural buildings.
The new concert hall is designed to house the acclaimed Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, which currently performs in a building dating back to 1936. The orchestra, a cultural beacon of Yekaterinburg, has a growing audience and an international reputation, having performed in over 20 countries. The need for a new, world-class venue has been long recognized to accommodate the orchestra's popularity and provide a space with the highest acoustic and technical standards. Zaha Hadid Architects won an international competition to design the new facility, beating out 46 other teams. The design is inspired by the physical properties of sound waves, with the main concert hall and a smaller chamber music hall appearing as if they are suspended within a large, undulating canopy. This "floating" design liberates the ground floor to create a spacious public plaza, intended to be a new vibrant gathering place for the city. The main auditorium will feature a 1,600-seat capacity, while the more intimate chamber music hall will seat 400. Large glass facades are a key feature of the design, aimed at blurring the line between the interior and the exterior, and offering views of the adjacent Weiner Gardens. The project also includes plans for a rooftop terrace with views of the city's Church of All Saints. The new structure will be built alongside the existing Sverdlovsk Philharmonic building, which is set to be preserved and integrated into the new cultural complex. This approach aims to complement the city's architectural heritage while creating a modern cultural hub. The project is seen as a significant step in enriching Yekaterinburg's civic and cultural life.
