Farmington Library Hosts Author for 'Take Your Child to the Library Day'
Farmington is celebrating "Take Your Child to the Library Day!" today with special events across its libraries. As part of the celebration, author Harper Ross is holding an in-person event to promote her book, "The Unwritten Rules of Magic."
"Take Your Child to the Library Day" is an international initiative that began in Connecticut in 2011, founded by librarians Nadine Lipman and Caitlin Augusta to encourage families to visit their local libraries. The event is held annually on the first Saturday of February. The Farmington Libraries have previously celebrated with unique themes. In 2023, the event was dog-themed, featuring certified therapy dogs for children to read with, a doggy-themed scavenger hunt, and take-home crafts. Another year, the theme was "The Library Rocks!," which included a pet rock storytime, a prize wheel with rocks and fossils, and a dance party. This year's featured author, Harper Ross, is a former lawyer whose debut novel, "The Unwritten Rules of Magic," was released in January 2026. The book is a work of magical realism. "The Unwritten Rules of Magic" tells the story of Emerson Clarke, a ghostwriter and daughter of a famous author, who discovers her late father's typewriter can grant wishes. The plot explores three generations of women as they navigate love, grief, and the unforeseen consequences of trying to control their lives through magic. The novel delves into heavy themes, including a parent's alcoholism and recovery, Alzheimer's, and teen pregnancy, as the protagonist grapples with the ethical implications of using the magical typewriter. Ross will be holding other author events in Connecticut to promote her book, including appearances at the Avon Library and RJ Julia Booksellers.
