Valentino Appoints Sombr as Muse, Michele Debuts Couture
Valentino is reinforcing its ties to contemporary culture by welcoming Grammy-nominated artist Sombr as its new muse. The move coincides with creative director Alessandro Michele's debut couture collection, “Specula Mundi,” which has earned acclaim for blending Renaissance motifs with a modern edge.
- Alessandro Michele was appointed Creative Director in March 2024, less than a week after the departure of his predecessor, Pierpaolo Piccioli, who had been with the fashion house for 25 years. The move reunited Michele with Valentino's CEO, Jacopo Venturini; the two previously worked together at Gucci, where Michele was Creative Director from 2015 to 2022. - Michele's former parent company, Kering, acquired a 30% stake in Valentino in July 2023 and has the option to acquire 100% of the company by 2028. Michele’s departure from Kering-owned Gucci in 2022 was reportedly prompted by a strategic decision to shift towards a more accessible, everyday aesthetic. - Critics noted that Michele's maximalist and eclectic "geek-chic" aesthetic, which revived Gucci's popularity, was clearly evident in his first ready-to-wear collection for Valentino in September 2024. The show was attended by his longtime friends and supporters, including Harry Styles and Sir Elton John. - Following Michele’s arrival, Valentino announced it would present its haute couture collection only once a year, in January, to "enhance its inspiration and artistic value." - Sombr, born Shane Boose, is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter who first gained viral attention on TikTok in 2022 while still a student at New York's LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. He writes and self-produces his own alternative-rock music, which led to a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. - The appointment continues Valentino's strategy of aligning with global music stars to connect with contemporary culture. Other recent brand ambassadors have included BTS member Suga.
