Ericsson Conducts First Live 6G Trial in Texas

Ericsson has conducted the world's first live 6G trial in the United States, showcasing next-generation wireless capabilities. The demonstration in Texas featured AI-powered robotics and real-time video streaming over a new 6G centimeter-wave spectrum. The company stated the milestone supports American leadership in the development of AI-native 6G technology.

The trial took place at Ericsson's U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas, and represents a significant step in the global "race to 6G." While full commercial deployment of 6G is not expected until around 2030, this pre-standard demonstration signals a push for American leadership in the next generation of wireless technology, a field with intense international competition from players like China, South Korea, and Japan. At the heart of the demonstration is the use of centimeter-wave (cmWave) spectrum, specifically frequencies between 7 and 15 GHz. This part of the spectrum is considered a "sweet spot" for 6G, offering a crucial balance of wide bandwidth for high data rates and good coverage, an improvement over the shorter range of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies used in 5G. The integration of Artificial Intelligence is not just an add-on for 6G; it's a foundational element, leading to the term "AI-native" networks. This means future 6G systems will be designed from the ground up to learn, predict, and automate network operations, enabling real-time optimization for applications like the AI-powered robotics showcased in the Texas trial. This AI-native infrastructure is what will enable futuristic applications such as holographic communication, massive digital twinning, and vast, interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems. The network itself will need to manage and orchestrate billions of devices, making AI essential for handling the complexity and ensuring security. The standardization process for 6G is a multi-year global effort coordinated by organizations like the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Work on the first 6G standard began in 2024, with the initial technical specifications expected to be finalized in 3GPP's Release 21 around 2028, paving the way for the first commercial systems by 2030.
