Apple Intelligence, announced at WWDC 2024, represents Apple's push into generative AI, with a focus on user-friendly and privacy-centric solutions. It aims to seamlessly integrate AI into the Apple ecosystem, enhancing user experience across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Apple's AI journey began in 2010 with the acquisition of Siri. Since then, strategic acquisitions like Turi and Xnor.ai, and the launch of Core ML in 2017, have fueled the development of on-device intelligence. Apple is reportedly investing $1 billion per year into generative AI research. A cornerstone of Apple Intelligence is on-device processing, ensuring personal information remains private. For more complex requests, Apple uses Private Cloud Compute, processing data on Apple silicon servers without storing it or making it accessible to Apple. Independent experts can verify this privacy promise. Apple Intelligence requires specific hardware, including iPhone 15 Pro models and later, iPads with M1 chips or later, and Macs with Apple silicon. Devices need at least 8GB of RAM, with 16GB+ recommended for optimal performance. iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 are also required. Key features include writing tools for grammar and tone improvement, image generation, and smarter Siri capabilities. Visual Intelligence allows users to search for images and videos using descriptions. The AI also integrates with ChatGPT for enhanced contextual understanding. Competitors include Google's Gemini and Microsoft's AI initiatives. While Apple emphasizes privacy and seamless integration, Google offers broader cross-platform availability and powerful AI models. Some AI features, like a contextually-aware Siri, have faced delays and are expected in 2026. Apple Intelligence is not available on devices purchased in mainland China or those using Apple Accounts set to mainland China. As of March 2025, Apple expanded language support to 11 languages. The system requires at least 4GB of free storage on iPhones for installing AI models. Security researchers are raising questions about data privacy risks, especially when sensitive user data is processed off-device. Apple's smart home display launch has been delayed due to AI development hurdles.
