Fremont to Host FOG Holi Festival
Fremont's annual FOG Holi festival will take place at Washington High School on March 7th. The all-ages Festival of Colors event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with tickets priced at $5.
The annual Holi celebration is organized by the Festival of Globe (FOG), also known as the Federation of Indo-Americans of Northern California (FIA), a prominent non-profit organization established in 1983. For over three decades, the FIA has been a significant force in representing the Indian diaspora and organizing large-scale cultural events, including the long-running Festival of India Parade. This Festival of Colors is one of the largest in the Bay Area, drawing crowds that have recently exceeded 7,000 people to the soccer fields of Washington High School. The event is a major logistical undertaking, produced in collaboration with several other community groups, including the Fremont Hindu Temple. Fremont's demographics make it a natural hub for such a large-scale celebration. The city has the fourth-largest population in the Bay Area, and as of 2023, over 62% of its residents are of Asian descent, with a significant portion being Indian-American. The ancient Hindu festival of Holi marks the arrival of spring and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. It's a day for fostering unity and forgiveness, where social boundaries are de-emphasized as people celebrate together. The playful throwing of colored powders is rooted in stories of Hindu deities Radha and Krishna. The event's prominence is often recognized by the attendance of local and state political figures, including Fremont's mayor and council members, who join the community celebration. The festival uses organic, skin-friendly colors and features nonstop Bollywood music from DJs, performances from local dance studios, and a variety of Indian food, reflecting a modern interpretation of the ancient tradition. The venue, Washington High School, is the oldest high school in Fremont, having been established in 1891. Its campus includes the 5,000-seat Tak Fudenna Stadium, which serves all of Fremont's high schools for major sporting and community events.
