Google has started rolling out “Ask Maps,” a Gemini-powered feature in Google Maps that turns place search and trip planning into a conversational prompt box, according to company posts and support pages published in March and still live on May 17. The feature lets users ask full questions instead of typing keywords, then returns a map with recommendations, directions and follow-up answers. Google said the rollout covers Android and iOS in the United States and India, with a related desktop help page also live. The launch extends Google’s broader effort to place Gemini inside products people already use for search, navigation and local discovery. ### What exactly does Ask Maps do inside Google Maps? Google described Ask Maps as a “new conversational experience” that answers “complex, real-world questions” directly inside Maps. In its March 12 product post, the company said users can tap an Ask Maps button and pose longer requests such as where to charge a phone without waiting in a coffee line, or where to find a lit public tennis court that is open that night. (blog.google) Google’s help documentation says the tool can handle follow-up questions and return recommendations plus destination details. On desktop, Google gives examples that combine several tasks in one request, such as asking for the fastest route to an airport, the best departure time for a 6 p.m. arrival, and a stop for flowers along the way. (blog.google) ### What data is Google using to answer those prompts? Google said Ask Maps relies on what it called its “fresh information about the world” and analyzes data from more than 300 million places. The company also said the system draws on reviews from more than 500 million contributors globally to generate recommendations and “insider tips.” (support.google.com) Lalitha Ramani, Google Maps’ general manager for India, said in a March 12 post that Ask Maps can personalize responses using signals such as places a user has searched for or saved in Maps. In Google’s example, a request for restaurant suggestions in Bengaluru could surface vegetarian options if Maps already knows that preference. (blog.google) ### Where is the feature available, and on which devices? Google said on March 12 that Ask Maps was “rolling out now” in the United States and India on Android and iOS. The company’s support pages also show an “Ask questions in Google Maps” page for computer users, indicating a web interface is available where supported browsers can run WebGL. (blog.google) Google’s mobile help pages show a separate Gemini-in-navigation experience for Android, iPhone and iPad. Those pages say users can speak to Gemini during navigation by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the Gemini icon, though Google notes that Gemini in Maps is not currently available for CarPlay on iPhone and iPad. ### How is this different from Gemini during turn-by-turn navigation? (blog.google) Google split the rollout into two related products. Ask Maps is built around pre-trip or in-app conversational discovery, while Gemini in navigation is a hands-free assistant layered into turn-by-turn guidance. In a November 5, 2025 post, Google said Gemini in navigation could handle route questions, look up places along the way, report disruptions and, on Android, connect with other apps for tasks such as sharing an ETA or adding a calendar event. (support.google.com) That same post said the navigation feature was rolling out “everywhere Gemini is available,” while Ask Maps had earlier been announced for the U.S. and India. (blog.google) ### What should users watch for next? Google’s support pages say users can leave thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on Ask Maps responses and can review or delete full conversations from chat history on desktop. The company also labels the feature as AI-powered and says it provides recommendations and destination details through Gemini in Google Maps. (blog.google) Google said in its November 2025 Maps update that Android Auto support for Gemini in navigation was “on the way.” As of the help pages crawled in mid-May 2026, Google was still directing users to Android, iPhone, iPad and desktop instructions for Ask Maps and Gemini inside Maps.
