Cupertino Approves Housing for Residents with Disabilities
The Cupertino City Council has approved plans for a new affordable housing project specifically designed for residents with disabilities. The development aims to provide accessible housing solutions that address unique challenges faced by this community within the city.
- The project, known as Mary Avenue Villas, will consist of 40 affordable apartments on a 0.79-acre parcel of city-owned land next to Highway 85. - Of the 40 units, 19 are specifically designated for adults and families with children who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. - The nonprofit developer Charities Housing is leading the project in partnership with the Rotary Club of Cupertino and Housing Choices for People with Developmental Disabilities. - The Cupertino City Council narrowly approved the project with a 3-1-1 vote after a lengthy public meeting. - This approval comes after the project was under consideration in various forms for approximately 20 years. - Construction is slated to begin as early as November 2026, with a potential completion date in 2028. - The development has faced opposition from some nearby residents concerned about the elimination of 89 street parking spaces to accommodate the complex. - To qualify, residents must earn 50% or less of Santa Clara County's area median income.
