Reliance Unveils $110B AI Investment Plan

Reliance Industries has unveiled a $110 billion investment plan for AI and data infrastructure over the next seven years. Chairman Mukesh Ambani framed the initiative as a move for India to build indigenous capabilities rather than "renting intelligence," aiming to establish digital self-sufficiency and challenge US and Chinese dominance in the field.

- The investment will fund the construction of gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centers, with initial construction already underway in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This first phase is expected to bring over 120 megawatts of capacity online in the second half of 2026. - To power these energy-intensive data centers, Reliance plans to utilize its own renewable energy sources, committing up to 10 gigawatts of solar power from projects in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. This aligns with a broader strategy to integrate green energy with AI infrastructure. - This initiative is part of a larger trend of significant AI infrastructure investment in India, with the Adani Group committing $100 billion for data centers by 2035 and the Indian government estimating over $200 billion in total AI infrastructure spending in the next two years. - The strategy includes developing AI capabilities tailored for India, with a key focus on creating models that can operate in several Indian languages to ensure wider accessibility and adoption across the country. - Reliance's digital arm, Jio Platforms, will be central to the plan, utilizing its extensive nationwide fiber network and 5G services to create a responsive, low-latency edge computing network that delivers AI services closer to users. - The announcement was made by Chairman Mukesh Ambani at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where he stated the primary constraint in AI is the scarcity and high cost of computing power, a bottleneck this investment aims to solve. - Reliance has previously announced collaborations with global tech giants Meta and Google to develop AI platforms in India, indicating a strategy that combines domestic infrastructure development with international partnerships.
