A 20-year-old Texas man is accused of firebombing Sam Altman’s San Francisco home, then threatening OpenAI’s headquarters less than an hour later. (nbcnews.com) San Francisco police said the first attack happened at about 4:12 a.m. on Friday, April 10, when an incendiary device hit an exterior gate at Altman’s home and started a fire. Officers said they detained the same suspect at about 5:07 a.m. outside OpenAI’s building at 1455 Third Street after he allegedly threatened to burn it down. (nbcnews.com) Federal court records unsealed on Monday, April 13, identified the suspect as Daniel Moreno-Gama of Spring, Texas. Prosecutors said he is charged federally with attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. (abc7news.com) The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office said Monday that Moreno-Gama also faces state charges including attempted murder. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said the case alleges he tried to kill Altman and a security guard when he threw the device at the gate. (apnews.com) Investigators said they recovered a document in which Moreno-Gama described views against artificial intelligence and listed executives at other artificial intelligence companies. Court papers said he wrote about “our impending extinction” and claimed he had “killed / attempted to kill” a victim. (sfgate.com) Federal agents searched a home in Spring, Texas, on Monday, April 13, in what the Federal Bureau of Investigation described as a court-authorized operation tied to the case. Associated Press reporting from the scene said agents spent several hours at the house before leaving. (usnews.com) The investigation widened again on Sunday, April 12, when San Francisco police said Altman’s home was struck by gunfire two days after the firebomb attack. Police arrested Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, and said officers seized three firearms at a separate residence. (abcnews.com) Police said it was still unclear whether the Sunday shooting deliberately targeted Altman’s home. ABC News reported investigators were examining whether the incidents involved mental health issues, a disgruntled current or former employee, or domestic terrorism. (abcnews.com) OpenAI said no one was hurt in the April 10 attack and that it was assisting law enforcement. Altman wrote the same day that he posted a photo of his husband and son in hopes of discouraging “the next person” from attacking his family’s home. (nbcnews.com; sfgate.com)
