Chiefs Trade McDuffie to Rams

Kansas City Chiefs traded All-Pro CB Trent McDuffie to the Rams for pick 29, a 5th, 6th, and 2027 3rd-round pick on March 4. Mahomes and Xavier Worthy reacted emotionally to losing the defensive cornerstone — massive shake-up ahead of free agency.

The trade sends McDuffie, a two-time Super Bowl champion, back to his home state of California. A first-team All-Pro in 2023 and a second-team selection in 2024, he was a key piece of the Chiefs' dominant defense. Over his four years in Kansas City, McDuffie started 55 games, recording 34 pass deflections and 8 forced fumbles. McDuffie was entering the final year of his rookie contract after the Chiefs had picked up his fifth-year option, which would have cost them $13.6 million in 2026. Instead of signing him to a massive long-term extension, Kansas City opted to trade him, a move reminiscent of their 2022 trade of Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins for a package of draft picks. The deal gives the Chiefs two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, No. 9 and now No. 29. This provides General Manager Brett Veach significant capital to address team needs. The Chiefs' cornerback room now features Jaylen Watson and Kristian Fulton as the likely starters. For the Rams, the trade fills a major need for a top-tier cornerback. They acquire a proven 25-year-old talent and are expected to sign him to a long-term contract. Los Angeles still holds the No. 13 overall pick in the draft, giving them flexibility to address other positions.
