SF State Offers Restaurant Entrepreneur Bootcamp
San Francisco State University will host a Restaurant Entrepreneurship BootCamp in Spring 2026. The program, part of the Lam-Larsen Initiatives and Centers, is designed to provide aspiring restaurateurs with the knowledge and tools needed to launch a new business.
- The Lam-Larsen Initiatives and Centers are made possible by a $25 million gift from San Francisco State alumnus Chris Larsen (B.S., '84), his wife Lyna Lam, and the Rippleworks Foundation. These initiatives are designed to help the Lam Family College of Business respond to shifts in the business sector and prepare students for the challenges of the modern workforce. - This bootcamp is part of a larger ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship programs at the university, which includes an on-campus co-working and mixed-use space called the Innovation Hub, and offers free legal consultation on business formation. - A similar bootcamp held in Spring 2024 provided attendees with a two-day intensive workshop covering topics like market segmentation, food and beverage legalities, recipe costing, and navigating food delivery systems. - Participants in past events have had the opportunity to learn from successful SF State alumni in the restaurant industry, such as Cristina Wu Feng, a 2021 Hospitality and Tourism Management graduate and founder of Cantoo Latin Asian Rotisserie. - The program is launching into a San Francisco restaurant market that is notoriously challenging, with operators facing high minimum wages, expensive rent, and what some have described as "death by a thousand cuts" from city regulations. - Industry trends for 2026 suggest a consumer focus on value, comfort food, and unique dining experiences that create a sense of community. There is also a move towards smaller, more curated menus and an emphasis on sustainable and whole-ingredient cooking. - Despite the challenges, San Francisco's culinary scene has shown resilience and growth, with a wave of new and inventive restaurant openings in 2025. - SF State's Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management Department also operates The Vista Room, an on-campus, student-run restaurant that gives students hands-on experience in the industry.
