UK Grants US Base Access for Iran Strikes

The United Kingdom has agreed to allow U.S. forces to use British bases for military operations against Iran. The decision, however, has become a political issue, with former President Trump criticizing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for taking "far too long" to grant approval amid the escalating crisis.

The decision to grant the U.S. access to UK bases marks a significant reversal of Britain's previous position. The government had earlier declined American requests to use facilities like RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for potential operations against Iran, citing concerns over international law. The U.S. will be permitted to use the bases for the "specific and limited defensive purpose" of targeting Iranian missile launch sites and storage depots. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that while British jets are involved in defensive operations intercepting Iranian strikes, UK forces will not be directly involved in offensive action against targets within Iran. The UK government's legal justification for the move is "collective self-defence of regional allies who have requested support." Officials have highlighted the threat to approximately 200,000 British nationals currently in Middle Eastern countries targeted by Iran. Key bases expected to be utilized by U.S. forces include RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, the British-controlled facility on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, which can host American heavy bombers. The announcement coincided with a drone attack on the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus. The strike caused only minor damage and no casualties, with officials believing the drone was launched before the Prime Minister's public statement. The move has drawn domestic criticism, with the Liberal Democrats calling for Parliament to be given a vote on the decision. Meanwhile, leaders from France and Germany have joined the UK in a statement condemning Iran's "reckless attacks" and asserting they will take steps to defend their interests in the region.
