Nvidia's Huang: AI as Essential as Internet
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argued AI is “as essential as the internet and electricity,” predicting the largest phase of AI infrastructure build-out is still ahead.
Huang envisions AI as a "five-layer cake" encompassing energy, chips, infrastructure, AI models, and applications. He stresses that AI infrastructure had to be completely reinvented because, unlike traditional computing, AI reasons and generates intelligence on demand. Nvidia is investing heavily in the infrastructure to support this vision, including a $4 billion investment in photonics companies Lumentum and Coherent to enhance data center interconnectivity. These partnerships aim to improve energy efficiency and resilience in large-scale AI networks. The company is also working to standardize physical deployment globally, partnering with Bechtel to modularize its "AI Factory" blueprint. Huang argues this AI build-out will require trillions in investment and create significant demand for skilled blue-collar labor, such as electricians and network technicians. He believes AI will not be a large-scale job taker because these workers are needed to build and maintain the infrastructure. Nvidia's strategy involves capturing value by setting technology standards and expanding its reach to national-level infrastructure projects. Examples include a 2,000 MW AI data center project with Reliance Jio in India and a $4.3 billion AI infrastructure development with YTL Power in Malaysia.
