JR Pass to cost more

Japan announced a 5–6% increase in JR Pass prices starting October 2026 for visitors from markets including the United States, India, Australia and Europe. (travelandtourworld.com)

Japan will raise Japan Rail Pass prices on October 1, 2026 — but only for passes bought through overseas agencies, not the official JR website. (japanrailpass.net) The JR Group said on April 9 that the increase follows fare revisions by some of its rail companies since the last nationwide pass price change on October 1, 2023. The official online purchasing service will keep current prices “for a limited time,” with the end date to be announced later. (japanrailpass.net) For adult standard-car passes bought through agencies, the 7-day pass will rise from 50,000 yen to 53,000 yen, the 14-day pass from 80,000 yen to 84,000 yen, and the 21-day pass from 100,000 yen to 105,000 yen. Green Car passes will rise from 70,000 yen to 74,000 yen for 7 days, 110,000 yen to 116,000 yen for 14 days, and 140,000 yen to 147,000 yen for 21 days. (japanrailpass.net) The Japan Rail Pass is a nationwide ticket for foreign tourists that offers unlimited rides on most Japan Railways trains for 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days. It is sold jointly by the six Japan Railways Group companies and is aimed at visitors entering Japan with “Temporary Visitor” status. (japanrailpass.net, japanrailpass.net) The split pricing changes how travelers buy the pass. JR’s official site says only passes bought online can be used to reserve seats online before arriving in Japan, while agency-bought passes still require exchange and pickup under the usual process. (japanrailpass.net) This is the second major pricing reset in three years. Japan Guide, a long-running travel information site, notes the pass already underwent a large increase in October 2023 and says the higher prices made it harder for many itineraries to break even against regular tickets. (japan-guide.com) The pass still covers most Japan Railways trains nationwide, including many shinkansen bullet trains, limited express trains, rapid trains, and local trains. But riders who want to use the fastest Nozomi or Mizuho services on certain shinkansen lines must buy a separate special ticket even with the pass. (japanrailpass.net, japanrailpass.net) For travelers planning Japan trips after October 1, 2026, the cheapest nationwide pass will be the one sold on JR’s own reservation site — at least until JR ends the temporary online price freeze.
