Firm Launches 'Natural GLP-1' Supplements
PureHealth Research has launched a "Natural GLP-1 Support" collection, a line of supplements marketed as a needle-free, prescription-free alternative to popular synthetic GLP-1 drugs. The company aims to tap into high demand for weight-loss and metabolic health products.
The market for prescription GLP-1 agonists—drugs that mimic a hormone to regulate appetite and blood sugar—is surging, with some forecasts projecting it will reach over $132 billion by 2035. This explosive growth is driven by the effectiveness of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. These medications, however, are expensive and can be hard to obtain. Without insurance, popular GLP-1 drugs can cost over $1,300 for a monthly supply. Facing high demand, manufacturers like Novo Nordisk have experienced supply shortages, leaving many patients seeking alternatives. Dietary supplements making weight-loss claims are regulated differently than prescription drugs by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, the FDA does not require supplements to undergo premarket safety or efficacy testing, placing the responsibility on manufacturers to ensure their products are safe and accurately labeled. PureHealth's supplements contain ingredients like berberine and green coffee bean extract. Some research suggests berberine may indirectly stimulate the body's own GLP-1 secretion. However, it is not a GLP-1 agonist and does not directly activate GLP-1 receptors in the same way as pharmaceutical drugs like semaglutide.
