Mobile Industry Launches 'Open Telco AI' Alliance

The GSMA, representing the global mobile industry, has launched the "Open Telco AI" initiative. Backed by major telecom operators, the project aims to create an open-source ecosystem to accelerate the development and adoption of carrier-grade AI for tasks like network automation and enhanced services.

The "Open Telco AI" initiative was launched because existing general-purpose AI models often underperform on telecom-specific tasks. A significant performance gap has limited progress, with only 16% of generative AI deployments in the telecommunications sector being applied to network operations. The alliance aims to address this by developing AI that understands the specific data and operational realities of networks. Key founding supporters of the initiative include AT&T and AMD. AT&T is contributing by releasing a family of open telco-specific models, while AMD is providing the necessary computing power for model training and evaluation through its GPU platforms. Their contributions are central to building the foundational elements of the project. The collaboration extends globally, bringing together a wide range of operators, vendors, AI developers, and academic institutions. Notable contributing partners include Nvidia, Google Cloud, IBM, and major international carriers like Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, and Vodafone. This broad coalition underscores a shared industry goal of fostering innovation through a more open, collaborative environment. A core component of the initiative is the "Telco Capability Index," which will measure and track the performance of AI models on a variety of telecom-specific tasks. This benchmarking system is designed to ensure that the developed AI is genuinely "telco-grade" and effective for real-world applications such as network troubleshooting and standards interpretation. This move toward open-source, specialized AI reflects a broader industry trend aimed at avoiding vendor lock-in and accelerating innovation. By creating shared resources and standardized models, the alliance seeks to lower barriers to entry and enable more efficient development of AI-powered solutions for network optimization and automation. Another similar group, the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA), was formed by SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, e&, Singtel, and SoftBank Corp. Their focus is on co-developing a multilingual Telco Large Language Model (LLM) to improve customer interactions through digital assistants and chatbots. The joint venture aims to serve a combined customer base of approximately 1.3 billion across 50 countries.
