Podcast Explores Hidden Barcelona

This week's episode of the *City Immersion* podcast explores the hidden corners of Barcelona. The audio tour guides listeners through the Gothic Quarter's literary cafés, Gaudí’s lesser-known mosaics, and vibrant local markets.

Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic, is the oldest part of the city, with a history stretching back over 2,000 years to the Roman settlement of Barcino. While it boasts medieval and even ancient Roman structures, much of the neighborhood's Gothic appearance is the result of a major restoration and reconstruction effort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some buildings were even moved stone by stone to enhance the area's medieval feel. Within this historical labyrinth lies a rich literary tradition. The iconic café Els Quatre Gats, which opened in 1897, was a central meeting point for modernist artists, including a 17-year-old Pablo Picasso. Other cafés, like Laie Libreria Cafe, continue this legacy as popular spots for the city's writers and editors. Beyond Gaudí's most famous works, Barcelona hides many of his lesser-known creations. These include the Cascada Monumental in Ciutadella Park, where a student Gaudí designed the hydraulic system and added two lizard statues. Other hidden gems are the Bellesguard Tower, which blends Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, and the unique gate of the Finca Miralles, designed to resemble reptile skin. The city's vibrant market scene extends beyond the famous La Boqueria, which dates back to 1217. The Mercat de Sant Antoni, housed in an 1882 art nouveau building, reopened in 2018 after a nine-year renovation and features 96 food stalls as well as a book and coin market on Sundays. Another local favorite is the Mercat de Santa Caterina, built on the site of a 13th-century convent.
