Mountain View Completes $20M Salt Pond Restoration Project

Officials in Mountain View have marked the completion of a $20 million salt pond restoration project. The initiative is part of a broader regional effort in the Bay Area to reduce flood risk and restore wildlife habitats. The project is intended to improve the area's resilience to climate change, representing an intersection of environmental and civic infrastructure development.

- This specific project at the A2W pond near Shoreline Park is part of the largest tidal wetland restoration project on the West Coast, the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project, which aims to restore 15,100 acres of industrial salt ponds. - The overarching restoration initiative began in 2003 with the purchase of 15,100 acres of salt ponds from Cargill Inc., a move championed by Senator Dianne Feinstein. - Conceptual planning for this particular Mountain View pond restoration started in 2012, with formal construction commencing in the summer of 2025. - To create the necessary habitat, the project imported 180,000 cubic yards of clean dirt, which is equivalent to the volume of about 180,000 washing machines. - The restoration is managed by a team from the California State Coastal Conservancy, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with Dave Halsing serving as the executive project manager. - Beyond wildlife benefits, the project provides improved flood protection for the Mountain View shoreline, which is vulnerable to sea level rise, with projections showing the Bay could rise between 23 and 42 inches by 2070. - The area now known as Shoreline Park, adjacent to the restored ponds, was previously the site of a regional landfill, an auto wrecking yard, and a hog farm before a decades-long transformation began in 1969. - The project includes new public access features, such as enhancing the San Francisco Bay Trail, which runs along the restored pond, providing new recreational opportunities.
