Google unveils Gemini Omni and Antigravity 2.0

- Google used its May 19-20 I/O conference to launch Gemini Omni, Gemini 3.5 Flash and Antigravity 2.0 as part of a broader agentic AI push. (blog.google) - The clearest signal was Google’s claim that Gemini 3.5 Flash runs four times faster than other frontier models while powering agentic workflows. (blog.google) - Google said the new Search box and Search agents began rolling out on May 19 in AI Mode markets worldwide. (blog.google)

Google used I/O on May 19 and May 20 to show that its next AI phase is less about chat windows and more about software that acts on a user’s behalf. At the conference in Mountain View, California, the company introduced Gemini Omni, Gemini 3.5 Flash and Google Antigravity 2.0, and tied them to updates across Search, the Gemini app and developer tools. (blog.google) Sundar Pichai said in his May 19 keynote that Google is now in “the part of the AI cycle where people want to see the value in the products they use every day.” Google’s I/O collection framed the announcements as part of an “agentic Gemini era,” with agents and agentic experiences appearing across consumer products and developer platforms. (blog.google 1) (blog.google 2) ### What is Gemini Omni, exactly? Google DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu said Gemini Omni is a new model family that can “create anything from any input,” starting with video. Google said the first release is Gemini Omni Flash, which accepts images, audio, video and text as input and generates video output grounded in Gemini’s real-world knowledge. (blog.google) Google said users can also edit those videos through conversational prompts rather than timeline-based controls. The company said Gemini Omni Flash is rolling out to the Gemini app, Google Flow and YouTube Shorts, with image and audio outputs planned later. (blog.google) ### Where does Gemini 3.5 Flash fit in? Google said Gemini 3.5 Flash is the first model in a new 3.5 family built for “frontier intelligence with action.” In its developer materials, the company said the model outperforms Gemini 3.1 Pro on most benchmarks while running four times faster than other frontier models. (blog.google) Koray Kavukcuoglu and Jeff Dean wrote that 3.5 Flash is aimed at long-horizon agentic tasks, including coding, planning and multi-step workflows. Google also said the model is the default engine for AI Mode in Search globally starting May 19. (blog.google) ### What changed in Search? Elizabeth Reid, Google’s vice president for Search, said the company is introducing what it called the biggest upgrade to the Search box in more than 25 years. Google said the redesigned box is “completely reimagined with AI,” can take text, images, files, videos and Chrome tabs as inputs, and is rolling out in countries and languages where AI Mode is available. (blog.google) Google also said Search is entering an era of “Search agents,” which users can create, customize and manage inside Search. In the same post, the company said it is bringing Google Antigravity and Gemini 3.5 Flash’s agentic coding capabilities directly into Search. (blog.google) ### What is Antigravity 2.0 supposed to do? Google DeepMind’s Varun Mohan and Logan Kilpatrick said Antigravity 2.0 is a new standalone desktop application for orchestrating multiple agents in parallel. Google said it includes dynamic subagents, scheduled background tasks and integrations with Google AI Studio, Android and Firebase. (blog.google) Google described Antigravity more broadly as its agent-first development platform, intended to take an idea to a production-ready application. The company also introduced an Antigravity CLI, an SDK and Managed Agents in the Gemini API, extending the same agent framework across terminal, API and enterprise use cases. (blog.google) ### How far is Google pushing this beyond developers? Josh Woodward’s May 19 Gemini app post said the Gemini app is becoming more “agentic,” with proactive, 24/7 help. Google’s I/O roundup said those consumer-facing changes include Gemini Spark, Daily Brief and other agentic experiences, while Android updates announced earlier this month described Gemini Intelligence as proactive system-level AI on supported devices. (blog.google) Google said on May 20 that its I/O announcements page links to the keynote transcript and product posts for Gemini Omni, Search, the Gemini app and developer tools. The company’s next step is the broader rollout already underway across AI Mode markets, the Gemini app, Google Flow, YouTube Shorts and Antigravity’s new desktop app. (blog.google) (blog.google) (blog.google)
