Ohio State U. Rushes LMS Updates for Accessibility Deadline
Ohio State University announced it is making adaptations to its Carmen Canvas learning management system and websites to meet the upcoming ADA Title II requirements. The university aims to complete the compliance updates by the end of April. This move signals a growing urgency among public institutions to procure and implement accessibility compliance tools ahead of the April 2026 federal deadline.
- The new Department of Justice rule for ADA Title II specifies the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as the required technical standard for all web content and mobile applications from public entities. - This mandate is comprehensive, covering all university websites, mobile apps, and digital course materials within learning management systems such as Canvas. - The deadline for large public institutions, including Ohio State which serves a population over 50,000, to achieve compliance is April 24, 2026. - Ohio State has previously faced accessibility-related legal actions, including a complaint filed by the U.S. Department of Education concerning website inaccessibility for students with visual impairments. - To meet the upcoming standards, the university is integrating a software tool called Ally into its CarmenCanvas platform to automatically scan for and provide guidance on fixing accessibility issues in course materials. - The university's compliance efforts are being led by Vanessa Coterel, Director of the Digital Accessibility Center, and Scott Lissner, the ADA Coordinator and 504 Compliance Officer. - Proactive accessibility measures are required under the new regulations, such as ensuring videos have accurate captions and that all digital content is navigable via a keyboard. - While there are some exceptions for older, archived content and social media posts created before the deadline, institutions are still required to provide accessible versions upon request.
