Health Advocates Push Folic Acid Awareness

On World Birth Defects Day (March 3), health advocates stressed the importance of folic acid and regular antenatal check-ups. The campaign highlights these simple interventions as key strategies to reduce birth defects and prioritize maternal health.

Since the U.S. mandated folic acid fortification of enriched cereal grain products in 1998, the prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) has significantly decreased. Data shows a 19% to 28% reduction in NTDs like spina bifida and anencephaly, preventing an estimated 1,300 birth defects each year. This public health intervention is highly cost-effective. The lifetime direct costs for a child with spina bifida are estimated to be over $560,000. By preventing these birth defects, the fortification program saves the U.S. an estimated $508 million in direct costs annually. Before the federal mandate, only about 29% of women of childbearing age in the U.S. consumed the recommended daily amount of folic acid. The fortification of foods like bread and pasta ensures a wider reach, as about half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended, and these critical birth defects occur in the first few weeks, often before pregnancy is known. In Virginia, there are approximately 60 neural tube defects annually. Localized efforts have been part of the broader public health push; for instance, a 1997 community campaign in southwestern Virginia focused on raising awareness about folic acid's benefits before the national mandate was fully in effect. Professional bodies like the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists strongly recommend that all women who could become pregnant consume 400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid daily. This can be achieved through supplements and fortified foods, in addition to a diet rich in natural folate from sources like leafy green vegetables and beans.
