Hudson Valley residents can drop off unused or expired medications at Wappinger Town Hall on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (dea.gov) The event is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which the agency said will run at nearly 4,200 collection sites nationwide. Wappinger Town Hall is at 20 Middlebush Road in Wappinger, New York. (dea.gov, townofwappingerny.gov) The Drug Enforcement Administration says Take Back Day gives the public a safe and anonymous way to dispose of expired and unused prescription medications. The agency’s public locator lists collection sites by ZIP code, county, city, and state. (dea.gov, dea.gov) The agency says unused drugs kept at home can be misused or diverted. It said National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has removed more than 20 million pounds of unwanted medications from U.S. communities over 16 years. (dea.gov, dea.gov) Collection sites accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. The Drug Enforcement Administration said liquids should stay tightly sealed in their original containers, and vaping devices and cartridges are accepted only if lithium batteries are removed. (dea.gov, dea.gov) Syringes, sharps, and illicit substances are not accepted at Take Back Day sites, according to the agency. People who miss Saturday’s event can still use year-round disposal locations through the Drug Enforcement Administration’s “Every Day is Take Back Day” program. (dea.gov, dea.gov)
