Michelin lands in the Philippines
Michelin has published its first 2026 selection for Manila, surrounding areas, and Cebu — a milestone people are framing as national recognition for Filipino cuisine. Senator Loren Legarda tied the announcement to Filipino Food Month and spoke about culinary heritage and food security in remarks linked to the guide's arrival (manilatimes.net). Michelin's social channels have also been using the moment to spotlight traditional desserts like turon and leche flan, bringing those sweets extra international visibility (philstar.com).
Michelin’s first Philippines guide is now in print, covering Manila, nearby dining hubs and Cebu in the 2026 edition. (michelin.com) Michelin unveiled the inaugural selection on October 30, 2025, at Manila Marriott Hotel in Newport World Resorts, with 108 establishments in all. The debut list included 1 restaurant with two Michelin Stars, 8 with one Star, 25 Bib Gourmand picks and 74 Michelin-selected restaurants. (michelin.com) The guide’s geographic scope goes beyond Metro Manila to what Michelin calls “Manila and Environs,” including Pampanga, Tagaytay and Cavite, plus Cebu. Michelin first said on February 17, 2025, that inspectors were beginning work in those areas for a 2026 launch. (guide.michelin.com; rollingstonephilippines.com) In Michelin’s system, Stars recognize top restaurants, while Bib Gourmand marks places that offer strong food at lower prices. In the Philippines debut, Michelin said Sarsa, Palm Grill and Lasa were among the Bib Gourmand awardees, and Offbeat was one of the 74 selected restaurants. (guide.michelin.com; philstar.com) Senator Loren Legarda used Filipino Food Month this April to connect the guide’s arrival to a wider food policy argument. In remarks published April 8 and April 11, she said food security and culinary heritage should be treated together and pointed to the Michelin recognition for Manila, Cebu and nearby cities. (manilatimes.net; tribune.net.ph) Legarda also tied the restaurant honors to farmers, fisherfolk and regional food traditions in her April statements. She had already filed Senate Resolution No. 164 in November 2025 commending the restaurants, chefs and hospitality workers recognized in the inaugural guide. (mb.com.ph; legacy.senate.gov.ph) Michelin has kept the Philippines story moving after the awards night by publishing dessert-focused coverage on its own channels. A recent Michelin feature highlighted five sweets from guide-listed restaurants, including turon and leche flan, and described dessert as an all-day habit in the Philippines rather than a course reserved for the end of a meal. (guide.michelin.com; philstar.com) That extra attention has widened the story beyond tasting menus and fine-dining rooms. Michelin’s own 2026 Philippines coverage includes street-food-leaning Bib Gourmand picks and regional restaurants, giving international readers a broader entry point into Filipino cooking. (guide.michelin.com; guide.michelin.com) For now, the first edition stands as Michelin’s formal map of where it looked in the Philippines: Manila and its nearby food centers, plus Cebu. The next test is what future editions add, and whether more Philippine regions make the cut. (guide.michelin.com; guide.michelin.com)
