Art Galleries Pivot to Gulf Amid Market Slowdown

Facing a global art market slowdown, international galleries are increasingly seeking opportunities in the Gulf region. The inaugural Art Basel Qatar and events in Riyadh are drawing attention as the area emerges as a resilient, cash-rich market for contemporary and experimental art.

- The recent global art market downturn saw sales contract by 4% in 2023 to $65 billion, a figure still above pre-pandemic levels. This was largely driven by a slowdown in the high-end market, with sales of works priced over $10 million declining due to economic and geopolitical instability. - Saudi Arabia's cultural expansion is a core component of its Vision 2030 plan, which aims to increase household spending on culture and entertainment from 2.9% to 6%. The government has established a Ministry of Culture with 11 specialized commissions to develop sectors from museums to film and visual arts. - The UAE's art market has been growing by an estimated 15-20% annually, with the value of imported and exported artworks projected to exceed $2.5 billion by 2026. This growth is supported by major institutional projects like the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, scheduled to open in 2025. - The inaugural Art Basel Qatar, launching in February 2026, will feature 87 galleries from 31 countries and will depart from the traditional art fair model. Curated by artistic director Wael Shawky, it will focus on solo artist presentations responding to a central theme. - In a significant sign of the region's growing influence, the UAE-based investment group ADQ invested $1 billion into Sotheby's in 2024, cementing the Gulf's position in the global art economy. - Veteran international galleries are establishing a physical presence in the region for the first time. Colnaghi, one of the world's oldest art dealerships (founded in 1760), is opening a new gallery in Riyadh. - New cultural districts are being developed to anchor the local art scenes, such as the JAX District in Riyadh. This area is home to galleries like ATHR and the recently opened Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMoCA).
