Atlanta's 37 Hidden Restaurant Gems
Atlanta Magazine spotlighted 37 "hidden gem" restaurants across the city, celebrated for their distinct flavors, creative menus, and local charm. The guide offers dining experiences beyond well-trodden foodie hotspots, featuring both global cuisine and down-home Southern fare.
The list of 37 hidden gems reflects a broader trend in Atlanta's dining scene, which is increasingly moving toward smaller, cozier, and more neighborhood-focused restaurants. This shift is a response to rising rents and a desire for more intimate, communal dining experiences. Many of the highlighted restaurants are chef-owned and deeply embedded in their local communities. Among the recognized spots is Babs Midtown, a breakfast and brunch café that has been a local favorite for over 18 years. Located in the basement of a house on Juniper Street, it's known for its eclectic decor and creative comfort food. The owner, Randy Adler, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, also runs a nonprofit called The Tzedakah Project to support the hospitality industry. Another featured establishment, Reuben's Deli, has been voted one of the top 10 delis in the United States and the best in Atlanta. With a menu of over 100 items, it's celebrated for its classic sandwiches like the Hot Pastrami and the Reuben. The deli encourages a lively atmosphere, with rules posted on the wall that instruct customers to "Yell" their order. The list also showcases the city's diverse international offerings, a hallmark of Atlanta's food scene which is heavily influenced by the vibrant immigrant communities along Buford Highway. One such example is Agora Midtown, which serves authentic Turkish and Greek cuisine. After a recent renovation, the restaurant now features an expanded menu and decor imported from Turkey. Atlanta's culinary excellence has not gone unnoticed on a national level. In 2023, Terry Koval of The Deer and the Dove in Decatur won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast. Several other Atlanta chefs and restaurants were also named semifinalists, highlighting the city's growing reputation as a top food destination. The city's food scene is also seeing a rise in non-alcoholic beverage programs and an increase in plant-based options, reflecting a national trend toward health-conscious and inclusive dining. Additionally, underground supper clubs and pop-ups are becoming more prevalent, offering unique and exclusive culinary experiences.
