Sydney Beach Tops Australia Rankings
A Sydney stretch has taken the top spot in Australia's best beaches for 2026 rankings. The recognition underscores the country's ongoing appeal for coastal lifestyle enthusiasts and beach tourism.
The winning spot, Bate Bay in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, is not a single beach but a collection of nine. This stretch includes well-known locations like Cronulla and Elouera, alongside four ocean pools and the Gunnamatta Bay tidal baths. This marks the second consecutive year the top honor has gone to a cluster of beaches rather than a single strip of sand. In 2025, Tasmania's Bay of Fires, a 50-kilometre stretch of coastline, took the inaugural win for a collective region. The list is curated by Tourism Australia's Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer AM, who assesses over 12,500 coastal spots. Beaches are judged against an exhaustive 130-point set of criteria that evaluates natural beauty, accessibility, community, and environmental management. Rounding out the top three for 2026 were Pinky Beach on Rottnest Island in Western Australia and Beachcomber Cove in Queensland. The full list represents every Australian state and territory, including an inland waterhole, Ellery Creek Big Hole in the Northern Territory, at number ten.
