BMW integrates humanoid robots into production

BMW introduced AI-powered humanoid robots at its Leipzig plant for dynamic, higher-value operations, collaborating with Hexagon Robotics’ AEON system.

BMW's Leipzig plant is the first in Europe to integrate humanoid robots into production. The AEON robot, developed by Hexagon Robotics, stands 1.65 meters tall, weighs 60 kilograms, and uses wheels instead of feet for movement. AEON will initially support high-voltage battery assembly and component production, focusing on repetitive, physically demanding, and precision-oriented tasks. This follows an 11-month trial in the US at BMW’s Spartanburg plant using robots from Figure AI. BMW aims to be a technology leader by integrating new technologies early in production. The company views these robots as a complement to existing automation, designed to relieve employees of strenuous or repetitive tasks and improve working conditions. The AEON project is a collaboration with NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Maxon, leveraging Hexagon's expertise in sensor technologies and software. Testing is scheduled to continue through April 2026, with full pilot integration planned for the summer.
