Robert Burns Farm Gets £12M Restoration

Restoration work at Ellisland Farm aims to recreate the family home of poet Robert Burns, with new images revealing a £12 million vision for the site. The project will bring to life the historic environment where Burns lived and wrote, deepening the connection between place and literary heritage. The restoration represents one of Scotland's most ambitious literary heritage projects.

- Robert Burns built the farmhouse at Ellisland in 1788 for his wife Jean Armour and their children; he lived there until 1791. - During his three years at the farm, Burns wrote some of his most famous works, including "Auld Lang Syne" and "Tam o' Shanter," producing about a quarter of his life's songs and poems. - The restoration will open every room of Burns's 1788 cottage to the public for the first time, as currently only two rooms are accessible. The recreation will be guided by newly discovered documents detailing original furnishings and materials, such as "bills of fare" that itemize everything from box beds to nails. - Plans for the site include transforming a barn Burns built into a Centre for Song for education and performances, and upgrading the granary to modern museum standards to display manuscripts and personal items. - The project, led by the Robert Burns Ellisland Trust, aims to make the site financially sustainable by adding a new café and visitor accommodation. - A 2021 conservation study found the historic buildings were suffering from damp and decay, making them unsafe for housing the museum's collection without extensive repairs. - Initial funding for the project's development phase has been secured from sources including The National Lottery Heritage Fund and South of Scotland Enterprise. - The restoration is projected to support 65 local jobs annually and inject approximately £576,000 into the local economy each year once completed.
