Brampton's Hurontario LRT Completion Delayed to 2028

The completion of the Hurontario LRT project, a major light rail line connecting Mississauga and Brampton, has been delayed until 2028. The ongoing setbacks are causing continued disruption and frustration for local commuters and businesses relying on the new transit connection.

The Hurontario LRT, now officially named the Hazel McCallion Line, was initially slated for a 2022 completion when announced in 2015. Early setbacks, including a rejection of the initial route into downtown Brampton by city council, pushed the timeline to the fall of 2024, a date that has since been abandoned. The project's scope has also evolved. A planned three-stop loop through downtown Mississauga was cut in 2019 to reduce costs, bringing the number of stops down from 22 to the current 19. However, in early 2024, the provincial government announced it had approved plans to build the Mississauga loop and extend the line into downtown Brampton. Construction, which began in early 2020, has been plagued by a series of issues. The construction consortium, Mobilinx, has faced multiple legal disputes with subcontractors over payments and equipment. These challenges, coupled with construction delays, led to a credit rating downgrade for Mobilinx in October 2024, signaling serious financial and operational challenges. The 18-kilometre line is a significant infrastructure project with a $4.6 billion contract for Mobilinx to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain it. However, by February 2026, only 45% of the track had been laid, and work was still required at 19 of the 55 intersections along the route. Some completed sections of track have even had to be removed and redone to meet quality standards. These persistent issues have had a significant impact on businesses along the Hurontario corridor, with some owners reporting substantial losses in revenue due to the prolonged construction and disruption. The repeated delays and lack of a firm completion date from provincial transit agency Metrolinx have led to frustration from local officials. While there is no official revised completion date, the project is now expected to be finished closer to 2028.
