CA Drought May Impact Future Produce Prices

While California's wine industry is currently feeling the most visible effects of the drought, the same pressures could soon impact other produce. Some vineyard owners are leaving crops unharvested because costs outweigh market value. This signals broader economic and environmental challenges that may affect fruit and vegetable availability and prices in the near future.

Despite a wet start to the winter, California's snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it melts, was only at 66% of its historical average by early March 2026. This "snow drought" is causing concern for the upcoming growing season, even with major reservoirs at 122% of their average storage levels. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has issued a cautious initial water allocation for 2026, citing the below-average snowpack and uncertainty in runoff forecasts. Agricultural contractors south of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta are slated to receive just 15% of their requested water supplies from the Central Valley Project. This sharp reduction in expected water deliveries creates significant uncertainty for farmers in the San Joaquin Valley, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions. The low allocation may force some growers to fallow fields, as one farmer noted he is considering not planting cotton for the first time in decades due to the water outlook. While national forecasts for 2026 predict relatively modest price increases for fresh produce, there is significant uncertainty. An agribusiness professor at Cal Poly noted that the current precipitation levels in the West could lead to decreased yields and higher input costs for California's fruit and vegetable producers. Long-term climate trends also suggest that heat-sensitive crops like strawberries and some vegetables are increasingly vulnerable.
