Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker
Belgian armed forces, with French naval support, have seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea. The vessel is believed to be part of the Kremlin's “shadow fleet,” used to circumvent Western sanctions, marking a significant escalation in the enforcement of trade restrictions.
The seized tanker, identified as the Ethera, was boarded by Belgian special forces with helicopter support from the French Navy in Belgium's exclusive economic zone. Prosecutors stated the vessel was flying a false Guinean flag and was being escorted to the port of Zeebrugge for confiscation. The ship's captain, a Russian national, is being questioned by investigators. This operation, dubbed "Operation Blue Intruder," marks a more assertive stance by European nations against Russia's sanctions evasion tactics. French President Emmanuel Macron described the seizure as a "major blow" to the Kremlin's network of ships. The Ethera was already on European Union and U.S. sanctions lists. Russia's "shadow fleet" is a collection of hundreds of aging tankers with opaque ownership used to transport its oil outside the G7's price cap mechanism. These vessels often operate with substandard insurance and engage in deceptive practices like turning off tracking transponders and conducting ship-to-ship transfers to hide the origin of their cargo. The G7, European Union, and Australia imposed a price cap in December 2022 on Russian seaborne crude, initially set at $60 per barrel, to curtail Moscow's war funding. This system prohibits Western maritime service providers, such as insurers and financing companies, from handling Russian oil sold above the set price. The use of older, poorly regulated tankers in the shadow fleet has raised significant environmental concerns. Experts warn that these vessels are prone to spills and mechanical failures, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems. Some officials also suspect the ships are used for espionage and potential sabotage of underwater infrastructure. This seizure is not an isolated incident; other nations have recently taken similar actions. In January 2026, the French Navy intercepted a suspected Russian tanker named the Grinch in the Mediterranean, while the United States has also boarded and seized vessels linked to the fleet.
