Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker

Belgian armed forces, with French naval support, have seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea. The vessel is believed to be part of a clandestine "shadow fleet" used to circumvent Western energy sanctions, marking a more aggressive phase of European enforcement.

The seized vessel, identified as the Ethera, was intercepted in Belgium's exclusive economic zone in the North Sea during an overnight mission dubbed "Operation Blue Intruder." Belgian special forces boarded the tanker, which was then escorted to the port of Zeebrugge for seizure. A criminal investigation is underway, with authorities questioning the ship's Russian captain and examining suspected false documents. The Ethera was sailing under a false Guinean flag, a common tactic for Russia's "shadow fleet" to obscure ownership and evade international regulations. This fleet is a sprawling network of aging, often poorly insured tankers used to transport Russian oil in violation of Western sanctions. Estimates on the size of this clandestine fleet vary widely, ranging from over 400 to more than 1,200 vessels. This operation highlights a more robust enforcement of sanctions designed to slash Moscow's war funding. The G7, European Union, and Australia imposed a price cap, initially $60 per barrel, on Russian seaborne crude to limit the Kremlin's revenue. However, Russia has utilized the shadow fleet to sell oil above this cap, with a large percentage of its seaborne exports now transported by these illicit tankers. France provided crucial air support for the Belgian-led seizure, with French Navy helicopters assisting in the boarding of the Ethera. French President Emmanuel Macron described the joint action as a "major blow" to Russia's shadow fleet, signaling a hardening stance among European nations. This follows other recent European actions, including a French seizure of another suspected Russian tanker in January. Beyond its connection to Russia, the Ethera is reportedly linked to an Iranian maritime network, underscoring the complex web of entities involved in circumventing global sanctions. The use of older, under-insured vessels in the shadow fleet also raises significant environmental concerns, with risks of oil spills and other maritime incidents. Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, praised the seizure as a "resolute and justified action" to deprive Russia of resources for its ongoing war. Russia, in the past, has condemned such seizures as "piracy." The Kremlin has previously warned it could respond with naval action if European nations increase the interception of its vessels.
