Scream 6 Officially Announced
Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures officially announced "Scream 6" with filming starting this summer. Radio Silence returns to direct the next installment in the meta-slasher franchise.
The quick greenlight for the sixth installment comes after the successful relaunch of the franchise with 2022's *Scream*. That film, a "requel" simply titled *Scream*, earned over $140 million at the global box office and was the first in the series to be made without the involvement of original director Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015. Directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence, are set to return for the upcoming film. They are joined by writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, all of whom collaborated on the 2022 film. This creative team is credited with successfully revitalizing the series for a new generation. The last film saw the survivors of the latest Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. The upcoming sequel is expected to continue this trend of moving the story to new locations, a departure for the franchise which has been primarily set in the fictional town of Woodsboro. While casting for the new film has not been officially announced, it is expected that the "core four" survivors from the previous installment will return. This includes Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. Courteney Cox, who has appeared in every *Scream* film as Gale Weathers, has also expressed interest in returning. The *Scream* franchise has a long and successful history, beginning with the original film in 1996 which is credited with revitalizing the horror genre. The series is known for its meta-commentary on the horror genre itself, often deconstructing and satirizing the tropes of slasher films. The sixth installment is slated for a March 10, 2023 release. This marks a quick turnaround for the franchise, with only a little over a year between the release of the fifth and sixth films.
