Stripe Solidifies Payments Dominance

Stripe was just named the top merchant payment provider by Forrester, scoring highest in more criteria than any rival. The company is also deepening its reach, with Klarna extending its AI-powered checkout tools via Stripe and a new Stripe-backed stablecoin, the Sui Dollar, going live for global payments.

Stripe's recent tender offer valued the company at $159 billion, a 74% surge from its 2025 valuation. In 2025, the fintech giant processed $1.9 trillion in total payment volume, an amount equivalent to roughly 1.6% of the global GDP. While PayPal holds a larger global market share at 43.4%, Stripe commands a dominant 68% of the U.S. e-commerce payment processing market. Stripe's valuation now surpasses the combined public market caps of its key rivals PayPal, Adyen, and Block (formerly Square). The Klarna integration utilizes Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs), a technology designed for "agentic commerce." This allows AI shopping agents to use Klarna's buy-now-pay-later options without accessing the customer's raw payment details, a step beyond the typical card-on-file default in automated checkouts. The new Sui Dollar (USDsui) stablecoin is issued by Bridge, a firm Stripe acquired. Built on Bridge's Open Issuance platform for compliance-ready deployment, USDsui is backed by cash and U.S. Treasury bonds managed by custodians like BlackRock and Fidelity. Sui was originally developed by the core team from Meta's Diem and Libra stablecoin projects. The network is already a significant player in the space, having processed over $111 billion in stablecoin transfer volume in January 2026 alone. Unlike competitors that retain interest from reserves, the yield generated from USDsui's underlying assets will be channeled back into the Sui ecosystem through the buyback and burning of SUI tokens. Stripe's developer-centric culture empowers engineers with high product ownership, a philosophy that has existed since its early days. The Forrester report on Stripe's billing product noted that engineers are its most satisfied customers, citing excellent documentation and APIs.
