InterDigital Renews License with Sony
InterDigital, a wireless and AI technology R&D company, announced it has signed a new patent license agreement with Sony. The renewal covers a range of Sony products. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
- This renewal builds on a long-standing relationship; the two companies previously extended a patent license in January 2022 and have collaborated on research in areas like 5G and the Internet of Things through a joint venture called Convida Wireless, launched in 2013. - InterDigital's business model is based purely on research and development, from which it generates revenue by licensing its extensive patent portfolio rather than manufacturing products. Its portfolio includes over 30,000 granted patents and pending applications in wireless, video, and AI technologies. - The agreement covers technologies that are considered Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs), meaning they are necessary to comply with industry standards like 5G and Wi-Fi. This makes licensing a requirement for companies producing compliant devices. - The license applies to a wide array of Sony's consumer electronics, which increasingly rely on wireless connectivity. This includes products like Xperia smartphones, BRAVIA televisions, PlayStation gaming consoles, wireless headphones, and professional cameras that utilize 5G and Wi-Fi for data transfer and streaming. - InterDigital holds a significant position in the telecommunications industry, with a portfolio of cellular wireless patents that ranks in the top seven globally for both quantity and quality. - Sony is one of many major technology firms that license patents from InterDigital. Other notable licensees include Apple, Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi, covering an estimated 80% of the global smartphone market.
