Pan-African Contemporary Art Gallery to Open in SF
A new gallery named The Art of Contemporary Africa is set to open in San Francisco, dedicating its space to Pan-African contemporary art. The venue will focus on showcasing artists and works from across the African continent. The opening adds a new cultural destination to the city's arts scene.
- The gallery, named Art of Contemporary Africa (AOCA), opened on February 12, 2026, in the Dogpatch neighborhood's Minnesota Street Project arts complex. - AOCA was founded by gallerist Craig Mark and South African photographer Clint Strydom. It is a sister gallery to The Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa, extending that institution's Pan-African program to the United States. - The gallery's inaugural exhibition is titled "Afropop," featuring a variety of artists to showcase the diversity of contemporary art from the continent, rather than a single style. - AOCA exclusively represents Dr. Esther Mahlangu, one of the most internationally recognized living artists from the African continent. Other featured artists include Ayanda Mabulu, Noria Mabasa, and Willie Bester. - The gallery aims to create a long-term, sustained presence for African artists in the American art scene through exhibitions and dialogue. Before opening a permanent space, AOCA participated in major U.S. art fairs like Expo Chicago and 1-54 New York. - The founders chose San Francisco due to the spirit of "ubuntu" (I am because you are), a sense of shared humanity and collective responsibility they feel the city embodies. - This new gallery joins other local institutions championing Black art, such as the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) and the Nexus Black Arts Festival.
