Japan Rail Pass hikes

The Japan Rail Pass aimed at foreign tourists will get pricier in October when six passenger rail operators increase fares by roughly 15 percent. (japantoday.com) Travelers planning fall trips should expect the pass — often used for multi-city rail travel — to cost materially more from that timing. (japantoday.com)

Foreign tourists buying a Japan Rail Pass through travel agencies will pay more from October 1, 2026, while official website prices stay unchanged for now. (japan-guide.com) The six Japan Railways Group passenger operators said the pass price will rise by about 5 percent to 6 percent in the first revision since 2023. An adult seven-day ordinary pass will go to 53,000 yen from 50,000 yen, and the seven-day Green Car pass will go to 74,000 yen from 70,000 yen. (bernama.com) For longer trips, the adult 14-day ordinary pass will rise to 84,000 yen from 80,000 yen, and the 21-day ordinary pass will rise to 105,000 yen from 100,000 yen. On the official Japan Rail Pass site, the current prices remain 50,000 yen, 80,000 yen, and 100,000 yen for seven, 14, and 21 days in ordinary class. (bernama.com) (japanrailpass.net) The split matters because Japan now has two price tracks for the same nationwide pass. Japan-guide says passes bought through the official website will keep the current prices after October 1, while passes bought through online or offline travel agencies will move to the higher rates. (japan-guide.com) The pass is a flat-fee ticket for long-distance travel on Japan Railways trains, including most shinkansen bullet trains, plus some buses and ferries. It is sold to foreign visitors with “temporary visitor” status, and also to some Japanese nationals who have lived abroad for at least 10 years. (bernama.com) Coverage is broad but not total. Holders still need to pay a supplement for Nozomi and Mizuho bullet trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu shinkansen lines. (bernama.com) This is the second major reset in three years. Japan Railways Group raised Japan Rail Pass prices by about 70 percent in October 2023, and Japan-guide says that increase sharply reduced the number of itineraries where the pass costs less than buying regular tickets. (bernama.com) (japan-guide.com) The rail operators said the new increase reflects fare revisions by member companies. East Japan Railway raised its train fares by an average of 7.1 percent in March 2026, with the minimum local base fare increasing to 160 yen from 150 yen. (bernama.com) For travelers planning autumn trips, the practical cutoff is the purchase channel as much as the calendar. Through September 30, the listed official prices are unchanged everywhere; from October 1, agency buyers face the higher fares unless Japan Railways extends the official-site exception.
