TASCHEN Releases Comprehensive Book on Gio Ponti

Publisher TASCHEN has released a new, comprehensive publication on the work of influential Italian architect Gio Ponti. The book provides a detailed look at his approach to materiality, classical proportions, and the integration of light as a fundamental architectural element.

- The book, created in collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives and its founder Salvatore Licitra, is an XL-format monograph covering 136 of Ponti's projects over six decades. It includes a biographical essay by Stefano Casciani and texts by Ponti's grandson, offering an intimate look at his work. - Gio Ponti was a founder of *Domus* magazine in 1928, a significant platform for modernist ideas in architecture and design that is still in publication. - His design philosophy often centered on the concept of "forma finita," the idea that a design is complete when nothing can be added or taken away, resulting in a signature creative "lightness." - A key example of his pursuit of lightness is the Superleggera chair for Cassina, which he refined over years to weigh only 1.7 kilograms. To test its strength, Ponti famously threw it from a fourth-story window, and it bounced without breaking. - Ponti's architectural work includes Milan's iconic Pirelli Tower, which, when completed in 1959, was the world's tallest reinforced concrete building and a symbol of Italy's post-war economic resurgence. The tower's innovative slender design was a collaboration with engineer Pier Luigi Nervi. - He championed a holistic approach to design, believing there was no boundary between architecture, furniture, and art, a concept he applied to projects like the Montecatini Building where he designed everything from the facade to the door handles. - Ponti considered light a primary architectural material, using it to define volume, influence the psychological perception of scale, and guide the flow within a space, as seen in projects like the Villa Planchart. - Many of Ponti's furniture designs remain in production with prominent brands such as Molteni&C, Poltrona Frau, and Cassina, demonstrating the enduring relevance of his vision.
