Walmart is remodeling more than 650 U.S. stores this year and plans about 20 new openings in 2026 and early 2027. (corporate.walmart.com) The company announced the plan on April 16 from Bentonville, Arkansas, saying it had already opened new stores this year in Eastvale, California; Apollo Beach, Jacksonville and The Villages, Florida; and a Neighborhood Market in Ocala, Florida. It also said more projects are coming later this year, including a Supercenter expansion in Tucson, Arizona, and a new Supercenter in Celina, Texas. (corporate.walmart.com) Walmart said remodeled stores will get wider aisles, updated layouts, expanded pickup and delivery space, refreshed pharmacies and Vision Centers with private consultation rooms, and more digital tools tied to its app and online catalog. Many Neighborhood Markets will also add deli and hot bar space, pharmacy delivery options, and upgraded areas for filling online grocery orders. (corporate.walmart.com) The push extends a five-year plan Walmart laid out in early 2024 to open or convert more than 150 locations while updating older stores. Retail trade outlet Supermarket News reported the 2026 remodel count is about the same as last year’s pace. (corporate.walmart.com) (supermarketnews.com) Walmart is making that bet with a very large store base already in place. The company says roughly 270 million customers and members visit more than 10,750 stores and e-commerce sites each week in 19 countries, and fiscal 2025 revenue reached $681 billion. (stock.walmart.com) Its recent earnings materials show why stores still sit at the center of the business: Walmart said global e-commerce sales grew 16% in fiscal 2025, led by store-fulfilled pickup and delivery and its U.S. marketplace. A February 2025 investor presentation also said Walmart handled pickup from about 4,600 stores and delivery from about 4,500 stores. (stock.walmart.com 1) (stock.walmart.com 2) The remodels are also aimed at the health side of the store, even after Walmart pulled back from its stand-alone Walmart Health clinics in 2024. The new plan emphasizes in-store pharmacies, Vision Centers, private consultation rooms, and pharmacy delivery instead of a separate clinic buildout. (corporate.walmart.com) (reuters.com) Walmart said new stores and remodels create construction work during development and long-term jobs in retail, pharmacy, and store leadership after opening. For now, the company is treating the store not as a leftover from pre-internet retail, but as the place where shopping, delivery, and health services meet. (corporate.walmart.com)
