Google embeds Gemini across Android

- Google said on May 12 that it is expanding Gemini deeper into Android and Chrome ahead of Google I/O 2026 on May 19-20. (blog.google) - Google said Chrome for Android’s new Gemini features run on Gemini 3.1 and will reach U.S. devices with Android 12 and 4GB RAM in late June. Google is moving Gemini further into Android and Chrome days before its annual developer conference, adding new on-device and in-browser AI features that the company says will begin rolling out this summer. Google said on May 12 that Android is adding “Gemini Intelligence,” a package of proactive features for phones that can automate tasks across apps, use screen and image context, and later extend to watches, cars, glasses and laptops. (blog.google 1) (blog.google 2) Chrome is part of that push. Google said the same day that Chrome for Android will get Gemini-powered page summaries, question answering, image tools and an “auto browse” feature that can carry out tasks such as booking parking or updating orders, with confirmation required for sensitive actions. (developers.googleblog.com) Those features are scheduled to begin arriving in late June for U.S. users on Android 12 devices with at least 4GB of RAM. The timing puts Android, Chrome and Gemini at the center of Google I/O 2026, which Google has scheduled for May 19-20. Google’s event page says the conference will include updates across Gemini, Android, Chrome and Cloud, with the keynote starting May 19 at 10 a.m. (blog.google) Pacific time. ### How much of this is happening on the device itself? Google said Gemini Intelligence is designed to work across “premium hardware and innovative software” on Android devices, and the company described the system as part of Android’s shift from an operating system to what it called an “intelligence system.” The company said the features are intended to automate multi-step tasks and use visual context while keeping “data private” and users in control. (blog.google) Chrome’s update also points to more AI processing happening closer to the device. Google said the Android browser features are built on Gemini 3.1 and will run on phones with a minimum 4GB of RAM, a hardware threshold that suggests Google is targeting mainstream mobile devices rather than only top-end handsets. (developers.googleblog.com) ### Which devices get Gemini first? Google said the first wave of Gemini Intelligence features will start with the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer. The company said broader availability will follow later in 2026 across other Android devices, including watches, cars, glasses and laptops. (blog.google) Google did not name specific laptop hardware in its May 12 Android post, but ChromeOS has already been moving closer to Android under the hood. In a June 2024 Chromium Blog post, Google said ChromeOS would be developed on large portions of the Android stack to bring Google AI features and device interoperability to Chromebooks faster. (blog.google) ### Where does XR fit into this rollout? Google has been laying the groundwork for Gemini beyond phones and laptops. In a May 2025 post, Shahram Izadi, Google’s vice president and general manager for XR, said Android XR was built in the “Gemini era” and described glasses and headsets that use cameras, microphones and speakers to give Gemini live context about what a wearer sees and hears. (blog.google) Google said at the time that Samsung’s Project Moohan headset was coming later in 2025, and it demonstrated Android XR glasses for messaging, navigation, photography and live translation. (blog.chromium.org) Those earlier disclosures align with Google’s newer statement that Gemini Intelligence will later reach glasses. ### What is still unclear before I/O? Google has outlined the rollout schedule and several feature categories, but it has not yet provided a full public accounting of model sizes, storage impact or how broadly local AI components may be installed across Chrome and Android devices. (blog.google) That gap has drawn attention as outside reporting has focused on Gemini Nano files appearing on some systems, raising questions about notice and local storage use; Reuters could not independently verify those reports from the materials reviewed here. Google’s published materials emphasize user control. (blog.google) The Android post says Gemini Intelligence is meant to keep users “in control,” and the Chrome post says sensitive actions in auto browse require confirmation. Neither post, however, sets out a detailed disclosure framework for local model downloads or storage management. ### When will Google give the fuller picture? Google has set May 19-20 for I/O 2026, with livestreamed keynotes, demos and sessions covering Gemini, Android and Chrome. The company’s public schedule says the event begins May 19 at 10 a.m. PT, when executives are expected to provide the next round of product details. (blog.google) (developers.googleblog.com)
