VFX artists are increasingly adopting real-time rendering engines like Unreal Engine to accelerate creative workflows. A recent podcast detailed how the shift from traditional CG software eliminated long render times, enabling faster iteration and the completion of full cinematic projects instead of just style frames for portfolios.

- Traditional offline rendering for high-fidelity visual effects, a process known as pre-rendering, can take hours or even days to generate a single frame of animation. In contrast, real-time engines like Unreal can produce 30 or 60 frames per second, offering immediate visual feedback. - The adoption of real-time rendering is a significant workflow shift, moving many creative decisions that were traditionally handled in post-production into the pre-production and production phases. This technique allows for realistic lighting and reflections on actors and props, captured directly in-camera. - While real-time rendering offers speed, traditional offline rendering is often still preferred for achieving the highest levels of photorealism, especially for complex lighting, reflections, and detailed character close-ups. Many modern pipelines use a hybrid approach, leveraging real-time for pre-visualization and layout, and offline rendering for the final, polished frames. - Epic Games, the developer of Unreal Engine, has actively invested in expanding its use beyond gaming, with strategic investments in companies like Spire Animation Studios and CLO Virtual Fashion to integrate the engine into feature animation and digital garment creation. - The move towards real-time rendering is also a cost-effective solution, as it reduces the reliance on expensive render farms—large clusters of computers dedicated to the time-consuming rendering process. - Beyond film and TV, Unreal Engine is used across various industries, including architectural visualization for interactive building walkthroughs, live broadcast graphics, and creating virtual sets for concerts and events. - Epic Games has received significant investments from major companies like Sony and The Lego Group's parent company, Kirkbi, to further develop the metaverse, with Unreal Engine being a core tool for creating these immersive digital experiences.
