New Tech Stack Emerges for WhatsApp Commerce

An ecosystem of tools is being built to turn WhatsApp conversations into revenue for Indian D2C brands. SaaS founders are building specialized WhatsApp CRMs to manage chats and automate follow-ups. Meanwhile, platforms like CustomerLabs are launching API integrations to pull WhatsApp conversations into Customer Data Platforms (CDPs) as first-party data.

The underlying engine for this commerce wave is the WhatsApp Business API, which allows for automation, CRM integrations, and multi-agent support. Unlike the basic business app, the API treats conversations as scalable workflows, enabling D2C brands to manage everything from abandoned cart recovery to delivery updates. This infrastructure is critical for handling high volumes of customer interactions efficiently. This tech stack is emerging as India's D2C market is projected to more than double by the end of the decade, with significant growth coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. These cities now represent the majority of online shoppers, influencing national consumption patterns and driving demand for everything from home decor to personal care products. The improved logistics and faster delivery times in these areas have made D2C brands more accessible. The shift to conversational commerce is driven by staggering engagement metrics. WhatsApp messages see open rates of 45-60%, a significant jump from 15-25% for email, and brands report 3-5 times higher cart recovery rates. For small and medium-sized enterprises, this translates into tangible growth, with some seeing a 70% reduction in customer service costs and a 5x increase in customer inquiries after adopting WhatsApp. To simplify adoption for small sellers, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has launched initiatives like the "ONDC Sahayak," a WhatsApp-based chatbot available in multiple Indian languages to guide sellers through the onboarding process. This aligns with a broader push for financial inclusion, as sales data from these platforms can help MSMEs access credit. Companies like Gupshup are also building conversational buyer apps on the ONDC network, allowing customers to discover, browse, and buy products entirely within WhatsApp.
