Nuro Demos AV Pick-ups in North Beach

Autonomous vehicle startup Nuro demoed its AI driver handling passenger pick-ups and drop-offs in San Francisco's busy North Beach. The company is practicing over 10,000 maneuvers weekly in simulations and on public roads ahead of its planned Global Robotaxi launch with Uber and Lucid Motors.

This move into passenger transport marks a significant pivot for Nuro, which was founded by former Waymo engineers and originally focused on autonomous, zero-occupant delivery bots. The company has developed three generations of its delivery vehicle, with the latest R3 model featuring an external airbag to enhance pedestrian safety. The shift follows a challenging period for the Mountain View-based startup. In 2023, Nuro conducted two rounds of layoffs, cutting 30% of its staff (around 340 employees) to extend its capital runway amidst a tough funding market for tech. This restructuring included pausing volume production of its R3 delivery vehicle to refocus resources on R&D and a more sequential development approach. The global robotaxi program is a three-way partnership: Lucid Motors will manufacture its Gravity SUV with the necessary hardware integrated on the production line at its Arizona factory. Nuro provides the "Nuro Driver" Level 4 autonomous system, and Uber will own and operate the fleet of at least 20,000 vehicles, making them available exclusively on its app. Nuro's AI-first autonomy stack utilizes a full suite of sensors—including lidar, radar, and cameras—and employs machine learning for perception, prediction, and planning. The company prioritizes safety over passenger comfort, a philosophy carried over from its goods-only delivery origins, and uses a combination of real-world testing and extensive simulation for validation. However, the North Beach demonstration area is not without its challenges. The neighborhood was the site of a significant robotaxi disruption in August 2023 when as many as 10 Cruise AVs stalled, blocking traffic. The incident, attributed to wireless connectivity issues exacerbated by a large music festival, highlighted the operational complexities AVs face in dense, popular urban areas.
