ChatGPT updates rolling out

- OpenAI began rolling ads into ChatGPT Free and Go accounts in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada today. (help.openai.com) - The same release swaps the fallback model to GPT‑5.3 Instant Mini when users hit GPT‑5 limits. (help.openai.com) - OpenAI also published ChatGPT Images 2.0, claiming more realistic, reasoning-driven image generation in tests. (dataconomy.com)

OpenAI has started showing ads in ChatGPT to some lower-tier users, widening a test that now includes Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. (help.openai.com) OpenAI’s release notes say the ads rollout began on April 16, 2026 for Free and Go accounts in those three countries. The company’s ads policy page says the test also includes the United States, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not get ads. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) OpenAI said it will not show ads in accounts where a user says they are under 18 or where the company predicts the user is under 18. The same help page says the geography and scope of the test can change as the experiment expands. (help.openai.com) The ads test lands as OpenAI keeps adding more paid layers inside ChatGPT. Its Go plan is a lower-cost subscription with more GPT-5 access than Free, and OpenAI says it is now available in all ChatGPT-supported countries, even though some features still roll out by region. (help.openai.com) (chatgpt.com) A separate April 9 update changed what happens when users run into message caps. OpenAI said ChatGPT now falls back to GPT-5.3 Instant Mini after users hit their limits for GPT-5.3 Instant, and that fallback does not appear in the model picker. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) OpenAI described GPT-5.3 Instant Mini as a lighter backup model with stronger writing, more natural conversation, and better context handling than the older GPT-5 Instant Mini it replaced. The company has also said GPT-5.3 is now the default ChatGPT experience for logged-in users as part of a single auto-switching system. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) OpenAI is also pushing image generation at the same time. Reports published on April 22 say the company introduced ChatGPT Images 2.0, built to better follow detailed prompts, place multiple objects correctly, and render text more reliably inside images. (macrumors.com) MacRumors reported that the new image system uses a model called GPT-Image-2 and is aimed at harder visual tasks such as multi-object scenes and instruction-heavy edits. OpenAI had not posted a matching official help article in the sources reviewed here, so the image details are based on outside reporting. (macrumors.com) Taken together, the April updates show ChatGPT changing on three fronts at once: ads for some lower-tier users, a new fallback model when limits hit, and a new image system meant to make visual outputs follow instructions more closely.
